DAVOS, Switzerland (MarketWatch) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on
Wednesday that Europe is serious about solidarity, but "what we don't want is to
promise something that we cannot deliver." In the opening address at the annual
meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Merkel said: "The question is do
we dare more Europe? Yes, we dare more Europe." She also said that some of the
efforts undertaken by European nations to deal with the sovereign debt crisis
are not sufficiently acknowledged. "It's important we remain steadfast on this
course of reform," Merkel said. "We still have to convince each other that this
is necessary." Jobs and growth will be very prominent on the agenda at the
European Union summit on Jan. 30.
